How Would I Get Into a Big 500 Company?

By James Ball

Our lecture this week was all about how do you get that job or land that big GIG after you have finished studying.

To explore this further, I gave myself a thought a little thought experiment with a few rules. 1 I’m not allowed to use Google or references of any kind and 2 is I have 3 hour to figure it out. Why? Because this is my sick and twisted version of Fun. Now Read on.

How Would I Get Into a Big 500 Company?

The following is my answer to this question

Once there was this guy, let’s call him Joe. He wanted to get into a big 500 company and hit it big and get the high paying job that he “deserved”. So how did Joe go about it? He knew from doing his research that all of these companies relied on the stock market. Knowing this, Joe set out to compile 2 stock market lists. On the first week he sent 1 of his list to 400 of the companies and the other list to the other 400 companies; 800 different companies in total. That may sound like a lot of companies but I’m forgetting on key point here. Both lists were titled stock market predictions.

After the first week had passed he had a 50/50 chance of one of the stock market prediction lists being better than the other on the second week would only send his 2 updated prediction lists to the 400 companies who got his BETTER Stock Market Prediction list. So 200 companies would get list 1 and the other 200 companies would get list 2. So after the second week had passed, once again he had a 50/50 chance of one of his prediction list being accurate to the stock market.

At this this point, the companies with the good prediction list might start to think “hmm maybe he’s onto something” or “it’s just dumb luck” (which it is, but the companies don’t need to know that.)

So the third week comes around and Joe is going to do the same thing again; Divide the 200 company list of good stock market prediction in half, and give 100 Companies list an updated Prediction list 1 and the other 100 prediction list 2. Can you see what’s happening here yet? Joe is thinning the herd.

It’s the fourth week now and Joe again does the 50/50 split of updated stock market predictions to the 100 companies that get the good prediction, meaning 50 companies get list 1 the other 50 companies get list 2.

The fifth week comes and you do the same thing again and thin the herd, do a 50/50 split of the companies who got the good prediction. And give 25 companies list 1 and the other 25 list 2.

The sixth week comes and by this point the 25 goog stock market prediction list companies might be having an interest in Joe and his predictions. But it that time again . . . you guessed it, it’s time to thin the herd. 13 companies get list 1 and 12 companies get list 2.

The seventh week comes and for the sake of simplicity I say the 12 companies with list 2 got the good prediction.  Again Joe does the 50/50 split and thins the herd. 6 companies get list 1 and 6 Companies get list 2.

The eighth comes and you have 6 companies who have been given 7 correct Stock market Predictions for the past 7 weeks.  Joes still hasn’t heard back so you guessed it . . . He thinned the herd 3 companies get Prediction list 1 and 3 companies get Prediction list 2

SO week 9 has arrived, what now?

This is where Joe sends an email or makes a phone call to the 3 good prediction companies from last week and says something like this.

Hi Mr/Miss CEO of Big 500 Company

My name is Joe Blogs. For the past 8 weeks I have given you eight correct predictions for the stock market for free. If you could give me 20 mins of your time for a face to face then I would really appreciate it.

I hope to hear back from you soon.

Sincerely yours.

Joe Blogs.

To conclude this post I will say this. To get into any business, You have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone, fail and make mistakes and get bake up and do it again, be a bit ballzy and most importantly, learn to hustle.

How to earn some COIN on the side as an Animation Student

By James Ball

Our lecture this week was titled Your Income & Your Art”.

Now as I’ve stated in previous posts, I’m Studying Bachelor of Animation; and one of the topics discussed during our in class discussion we had yesterday was that of “how are you as a creative artist going to fund your creative endeavours?” Whether it be for Graphic Design, Music, Games, Film, or in my particular case, Animation.  In my research I have discovered 2 interesting things that I can start doing right now to slowly build an audience and make a little extra coin on the side.

In the course I’m studying, one of the things we get to learn is 3D character/hard surface modelling, UV unwrapping, Texturing and Rigging. As I’m slowly getting better at these tasks and improve on my speed of production, I see myself probably getting a high definition model out in 3 Weeks. Guess what? 3 weeks is how long my end of trimester break is. Seeing any patterns here?

 Image 1

Okay, okay, but what would I do with such a model you ask? Well sell it on the interwebs of course. But where would you sell it you ask? Why a friendly and awesome site called “TurboSquid”. TurboSquid and it’s 30 000 plus library of 3D models are used by game developers, news agencies, architects, visual effects studios, advertisers, and creative professionals around the world. TurboSquid’s Mission statement goes as Follows:

“Our goal is to save artists the time of making a great model, and instead let them add their own personality to their creations. Our customers tell us they save 27 hours per model purchased, which can be a lifesaver in a time crunch.

TurboSquid's secondary mission is to focus the creativity of artists around the world to continually improve our library of models, while helping the artists who supply those models build a career as professional 3D modellers.”

So I did a bit more digging and “oh boy did I find the jackpot!” Let me elaborate a little shall I. If you sign up to their site, upload your Model and stick with the standard membership then it doesn’t matter how good or bad your model is, you still going to get a flat rate return of 40% Profit back from your sale.

Example: If I sell my model for $100 and someone buys it, I get a $40 Return and TurboSquid gets a $60 return for the sale.

Now on the other hand if I were to TurboSquid’s “Squid Guild” and be on their Loyalty Program (meaning I Upload My Models to their site and on their site) then my return can go from 40% to a staggering 80% per sale.

Example: If I sell my model for $100 and someone buys it, I get an $80 Return and TurboSquid gets a $20 return for the sale.

The second thing I have learnt from my research is that “Content is King” when it comes to blog posts. So to all of the people who have read or are still reading this Blog I going to try and make a conscious effort to post 2 times a week to start off with and see how we go from there.

Finally I would like to leave you with this. A clip from and up and coming animation Flip book I’m working on for a different unit.

100 frames in 4 seconds.

TRIMESTER 2 and a Story!

By James Ball

So Trimester 2 at SAE Insitute Perth Campus has gone off quit smoothly. Again, I'm studying 4 units which are as follows:

- Fundamentals of Animation
- Production 1
- 3D Character Design and Animation
- And lastly the Unit I'm writing this blog post for . . . Creative Industry Unit.

I'll begin by giving a quick overview of what we are to do in the next 11 weeks.

Fundamentals of Animation: in this unit we study the basic principles of animation by creating a flip book with various animation techniques and a walk cycle.

Production 1: We are put into teams and are asked to create an Animatic for a new pilot show based at 12 year old's that would watch ABC3 . . . Look out for update posts about this in the future.

3D Character Design and Animation: For this unit, our main objective is to design a concept for a human character model it up with clothing on, in 3DS Max. UV Unwrap, texture, rig animate and make a final show reel.

Creative Industry Unit: This is the Unit where we have to begin to make a name for our selves and begin to network with peers, staff, local and international people related to our field of study and finally go to expos, events and meetups.

Okay so as I promised in the title . . . A Story!

What kind of story you ask?

A real life story person who is reading this.

So I was on the train going up to Uni reading a concept art book as you do to pass the time of the 50 min train ride and woman who looked to be in her 30's comments on the book I'm reading.

Her: Aren't you a little to old to be reading picture books

Me: Nope

Her: Why not, what are you studying then?

Me: Animation.

Her: *Gasp* That must be one lazy course your studying then because isn't it just picture?

Me: Sure, It's just Pictures! . . . Do you know how many "Pictures" there are in a second of film?

Her; Yeah 24.

Me: So If I wanted to make a 5 min animation then how many Pictures would I need to draw?

Her: Um . . . i don't know.

Me: Well there is 240 frames for 10 seconds of animation and there is 300 seconds in 5 minutes.

Her: *Thinking* So 240 times 6 is . . . 1440 frames, then I would times that by 5 right?

Me: Right!

Her: So 1440 times 5 is . . . 7200 frames for 5 minutes of animation.

Me: So do you still think animation is lazy?

Her: Well it's still just pictures isn't it?

Me: *Face palm*

I was a bit annoyed after that and lucky for me she hopped off at the next station and could get back to my book.

Why do people always have to think this is to do right.
